Hotel Marcel

Hotel Marcel / New Haven, CT

Commissioned works for the guest rooms of the Hotel Marcel. 96 unique, large scale patchwork pieced textile wall hangings (18” x 72” each) and a set of two silkscreen limited edition prints. The hotel building is an iconic Brutalist structure — constructed in 1970 by Bauhaus designer and architect Marcel Breuer to house the headquarters of the Armstrong Rubber Company, it has now been beautifully renovated into the Hotel Marcel by architecture firm Becker + Becker and is the first net-zero hotel in the United States.

The commissioned artworks pay homage to the legacy of the Bauhaus, as well as the facade of the Marcel Breuer building itself. The textile wall hangings feature a combination of new and second-hand fabrics in different colors, weights, textures, and patterns, including fabric samples from the hotel’s interior design. Incorporating the repurposed textiles gives a depth to the work and aligns with the sustainability ethos of the Hotel Marcel. The wall hangings were pieced and sewn together one at a time, making each one handmade and completely unique.
